The scriptures say "that God is the same yesterday, today, and forever, and in him there is no variableness neither shadow of changing" (Morm. 9:9). They furthermore contain many marvelous stories of healing or direct connections to faith and healing, including but not limited to:
"Jesus said unto the centurion, Go thy way; and as thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee. And his servant was healed in the selfsame hour" (Matt. 8:13).
"And [Jesus] said unto her, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague" (Mark 5:34).
"The blind men came to him: and Jesus saith unto them, Believe ye that I am able to do this? They said unto him, Yea, Lord. Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you. And their eyes were opened" (Matt. 9:28 – 30).
"Alma cried unto the Lord, saying: O Lord our God, have mercy on this man, and heal him according to his faith which is in Christ. And when Alma had said these words, Zeezrom leaped upon his feet, and began to walk; and this was done to the great astonishment of all the people" (Alma 15:10 – 11).
"As many as were converted did truly signify unto the people that they had been visited by the power and Spirit of God, which was in Jesus Christ, in whom they believed. And as many as had devils cast out from them, and were healed of their sicknesses and their infirmities, did truly manifest unto the people that they had been wrought upon by the Spirit of God, and had been healed" (3 Ne. 7:21 – 22).
"To some it is given to have faith to be healed; and to others it is given to have faith to heal" (D&C 46:19 – 20).
Do we believe the scriptures? If we imagine that God has designed antibiotics and other pharmaceuticals to replace faith, then we do not believe these scriptures for they state that 'God is the same' now as he was in the times those scriptural accounts were done. What role do pharmaceuticals play then if we see that they can prove effective in assuaging the symptoms of sickness? They are as the administration of herbs and mild foods to the sick, which the Lord has expressly said is useful in the absence of faith:
"Whosoever among you are sick, and have not faith to be healed, but believe, shall be nourished with all tenderness, with herbs and mild food, and that not by the hand of an enemy" (D&C 42:43, emphasis added).
Therefore we see again the power of faith in superiority to any man-made drug or even any God-made plant in restoring health if the faith for the miracle can be produced by the one healing and/or the one being healed. If we laud science and laugh at faith, believing that God no longer operates among men as he used to, then we should not be surprised that we do not receieve miracles from God:
"If ye have imagined up unto yourselves a god who doth vary, and in whom there is shadow of changing, then have ye imagined up unto yourselves a god who is not a God of miracles" (Morm. 9:10).
"If the day cometh that the power and gifts of God shall be done away among you, it shall be because of unbelief. And wo be unto the children of men if this be the case; for there shall be none that doeth good among you, no not one. For if there be one among you that doeth good, he shall work by the power and gifts of God" (Moro. 10:24 – 25).
